Three Countries Approval of the First Dengue Fever Vaccine

When a certain type of mosquito bites someone, it is the virus that the mosquito deposits that causes dengue. This causes 400 million infections per year worldwide. Dengue is a painful, flu-like disease that can often be fatal.

Until recently, there has been no effective method of prevention to avoid contracting the Dengue virus. However, the outlook against the disease is looking better with a new vaccination approval. Dengvaxia was developed by the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi, and has now been approved in the U.S by three countries – Mexico, Philippines, and Brazil.

Exactly when the immunizations will be implemented and at what price remains undecided, as terms of the vaccine are being negotiated between the company and the countries.
